So the other day on MSN there was an intriguing headline… About how people are scared of the wrong things. And one was how motorcycles were more dangerous then horses…. I AM SHOCKED.
Are you serious!! people are more afraid of horses then MOTORCYCLES?!. Adorable large pet vs. Roaring hunk of metal…. Here is what the little snippet on it said:
Whoa! Is a motorcycle more deadly than a horse?
Motorcycle accidents take the lives of about 5,000 Americans each year. Most of these accidents involve a collision with another vehicle, but about one-fourth involve only the motorcycle (plus, usually, a solid object such as a tree). About half of the deceased motorcyclists were not wearing helmets at the time of the accident, about half had alcohol in their systems, and well over 90% were males.
Horse accidents, by way of comparison, kill only about two Americans each year (with young females disproportionately overrepresented). There are about 7 million motorcycles in the country, and about 10 million horses (not all are ridden, of course). So motorcycles are clearly more dangerous than horses.
The Young females being over represented is no surprise. I think I could add up all the dumb stuff I have done with horses and then add up the dumb stuff I’ve done not including horses the horses are probably better represented. Also pretty much every horse story I’ve ever heard of involves a girl being injured or narrowly missing being injured by a horse. just a few examples off the top of my head
- Any saddle club book or movie
- Wild hearts Can’t be Broken
- Pony Pals
- Somewhere Tomorrow
- Afraid to ride
